By |2021-08-17T13:41:34+00:00August 19th, 2021|Blog|0 Comments

Every third Saturday of September, residents and visitors alike gather at the beaches, bays and waterways for the annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup.  These hordes of volunteers hit the sand and shores at 8 a.m. and work until noon to get the trash out of the splash. Alabama joined the International Coastal Cleanup in 1987 and since then, more than 100,000 volunteers have taken part in the local event. In the first 28 years, 15 million pounds of trash was collected [...]

Five interesting facts about the glorious oyster

By |2021-08-17T13:34:32+00:00August 5th, 2021|Blog|0 Comments

Each year, August 5 is the day to celebrate everyone’s favorite briny bivalve mollusk: the oyster. Here on the Alabama Gulf Coast, we celebrate these delicacies every day.   How much do you know about oysters?    One oyster can filter 1.3 gallons of water per hour through their gills. They feed on organisms, such as plankton, during the process.    Oysters have been eaten by humans for thousands of years.   Oysters change their gender during their lives. They all start off as males and most change to female by [...]

Get the family involved as you prepare for your day of fun in the sand and sun. Kick off your shoes and enjoy the squeaky, sugar-white sand of our beaches

By |2021-06-14T13:09:22+00:00June 24th, 2021|Blog|0 Comments

Ahhh . . . There isn’t anything like that feeling when your bare feet first touch the soft, sugar-white sand on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. As you walk, you may notice a squeaking noise coming from under your feet.   There is a reason our sand is so white and soft, and so apt to make a squeaking or whistling noise as you walk. The sand on the beaches of the northern Gulf of Mexico is made of tiny grains of quartz crystals that have washed down from the Appalachian Mountains over thousands of years.
