There are many things to be aware of when you’re enjoying a day playing and swimming at the beach. If you take precautions with sunscreen and water safety, observe the warning flags, and practice the Leave Only Footprints program, a fun day at the beach will remain fun!   Those familiar with the Alabama Beach Warning Flag System probably know what the green, yellow and red flags indicate. But do you know what the purple flag means? The purple flag is flown when dangerous marine life [...]

Eco-friendly fishing practices for your fall beach trip

By |2020-09-23T16:12:32+00:00September 9th, 2020|Blog|0 Comments

As you plan your fall fishing trip to Coastal Alabama, take some time to consider how you can Leave Only Footprints - or in this case, leave only a boat wake.    Marine debris is a world-wide problem and we can all do our part to help alleviate it. Trash in the water spoils the natural beauty, but more importantly, it is hazardous to all types of marine life. A few of the consequences of marine debris include habitat damage; wildlife injury, illness and death; navigation hazards; and vessel damage [...]

By |2020-09-23T16:01:42+00:00September 2nd, 2020|Blog|0 Comments

The 33rd Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup is slated for September 19, 2020. It’s your chance to volunteer with thousands of others across the world to help clean coastal waters and shorelines on International Coastal Cleanup Day. Alabama’s first Coastal Cleanup was held in 1988 and since then more than 1.5 million pounds of trash has been collected by 83,000+ volunteers.   With the number of visitors to our beautiful shores topping 5 million each year, things can get a bit dirty. The Leave Only Footprints program has helped tremendously with keeping our coastline clean, but trash still makes its [...]

By |2020-08-19T18:48:52+00:00August 26th, 2020|Blog|0 Comments

Gulf Shores Public Beach wheelchair accessible mats For someone with mobility difficulties, the beautiful white-sand beaches in Gulf Shores used to be difficult to access. A specialty wheelchair was needed or other measures had to be taken to get a little closer to the water. That all changed on January 24, 2018, when the City of Gulf Shores installed their first Access Mat on the east side of the public beach. A few months later, another mat was installed on the west side of the public [...]

Yes, you can recycle at the beach

By |2020-08-19T18:27:18+00:00August 12th, 2020|Blog|0 Comments

Let’s talk recycling. We all know it’s important for the environment. But we don’t always know what we can recycle and how to do it, especially while on vacation, so the cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach make it easy for you.  On the beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, you’ll notice two cans, one for landfill refuse and one for recycling. Simply separate your trash from your recyclables and toss them into the proper can as you leave the beach.   Items that can be recycled:  Aluminum [...]

How can you not love a sea turtle? Just look at that face! Did you know these endangered beauties nest on Alabama’s beaches?   Each year, starting in May, sea turtles make their way to shore to lay their eggs. Here on Alabama’s beaches, we are lucky to have them visit our sugar-white sand. In 2019, 114 nests were recorded in Alabama. With an average of 110 eggs per nest, that’s a lot of baby turtles.  Volunteers with Share The Beach cruise the beach each [...]
