A day may be sunny and the water beautiful, but high surf and/or strong currents can create a dangerous time to go into the Gulf of Mexico. When you visit the beach, you don’t want to take unnecessary risks. Yes, playing in those big waves can be fun, but be aware of the warnings.

Take a few moments to learn about each color of the flag warning system.

  • A yellow flag indicates a medium hazard. Proceed, but with caution.
  • A red flag indicates a high risk. It’s best not to enter the water.
  • A double-red flag means the water is closed. Definitely don’t go in the water if you see the double-red flag.
  • A purple flag is a sign of dangerous marine life. That could mean jellyfish, or it could mean sharks.

Just enjoy the beach and shore when the red flag is flying. There will be other – safer – days to get in the water.
