Leave Only Footprints, the initiative that aims to keep the beaches in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach healthy and beautiful, is similar to the principles of Leave No Trace. This program created by the U.S. Forest Service emphasizes wilderness ethics and sustainable travel.

The principles of Leave No Trace include:

  • Plan ahead and prepare.
  • Travel and camp on durable surfaces.
  • Dispose of waste properly.
  • Leave what you find.
  • Minimize campfire impacts.
  • Respect wildlife.
  • Be respectful of other visitors.

Leave Only Footprints requires beachgoers to:

  • Take their trash and beach gear with them when they leave.
  • Fill any holes deeper than 12 inches.
  • Avoid solicitation or other related activities on the beach.

Other federal, state and local rules for the beach prohibit:

  • Vehicles
  • Loud music
  • Glass containers
  • Litter
  • Metal shovels and excessive digging
  • Overnight camping
  • Fireworks
  • Fire
  • Pets
  • Tents or structures larger than 10′ by 10′

Beachgoers must also:

  • Be respectful of private property beyond the bounds of your lodging property.
  • Observe and obey the beach warning flag system.

One final reminder: Make footprints the only things you leave at the beach.
