lifeguard stand in Orange Beach, AlabamaGreen, yellow, red, purple, double red. Those are the flag colors you see flying along the Gulf of Mexico beaches in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. The flags are there for your safety, but do you know what they mean?

Weather and wildlife conditions – locally and offshore – can cause dangerous situations at our beaches. It may be easy to recognize high surf and dangerous waves, but rip currents may not always be visible on top of the water. Conditions can change quickly, so always exercise caution, even on calm days.

Let’s take a look at our flags, one by one.

  • Yellow flag  Medium hazard means moderate surf or currents.
  • Red flag – High hazard with high surf and strong currents.
  • Double red flags – The water is closed to the public. You can still enjoy the beach, but stay out of the water.
  • Purple – Dangerous marine life is present.

If you are heading to the beach, first check the current surf conditions by dialing 251-968-TIDE for Gulf Shores or 251-981-SURF for Orange Beach.

Always pay attention to the flags, as it could save your life. Be safe, have fun, and Leave Only Footprints.
