Alabama SeafoodHere on the Alabama Gulf Coast, we celebrate seafood year-round. Even so, we’ll acknowledge that September is National Seafood Month and celebrate a little extra with freshfromthe-gulf seafood

Do you know how to make sure you are eating fresh Alabama Gulf Seafood? We have a few tips to share regarding ordering in a restaurant or buying from a market.

  • Don’t be shy. Ask where the seafood comes from. This applies to restaurants and markets. Some locations provide a tracking system for your seafood. The most popular are Gulf Wild and Fish Trax. Look for the signs as you consider your purchase
  • Does the price seem a little too low for premium seafood? It could be mislabeled. Buyer beware: If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
  • Buy from a reputable source. Many seafood markets offer freshofftheboat options. Fresh fish should not have a strong “fishy” smell – instead, it should have a mild seawater smell. Drying or darkening around the edges are other indications that it isn’t fresh.

When you purchase your Alabama seafood, follow these tips to ensure your product is safe and tasty:

  • Cold is a game winner. Have your seafood packed in ice or place it in a cooler until you reach your destination. As soon as you arrive, put it in the coldest part of the refrigerator.
  • When you are preparing at home, keep your prep area clean. Never let other foods come in contact with raw seafood or its juices.
  • Seafood should be properly cooked to an internal temperature of 145 degrees for 15 seconds or until the flesh is opaque and flaky. To be sure, use a food thermometer placed in the thickest part of the filet.
