Winter is an excellent time to hit the waters of the Alabama Gulf Coast. With mild temperatures and great fishing, boaters can enjoy the gulf and our bays year-round.
But there are steps you should take to protect those waterways while you’re out.
First, report any leaking-fuel incidents you see while out boating. Anyone witnessing an oil spill, chemical release or maritime security incident should call the National Reporting Center hotline at 800-424-8802.
Watch out for the spread of aquatic invasive species. These species can attach themselves to hulls, rudders and props, and can be carried into bilge water. Invasive species damage native species by introducing new parasites and diseases. The lion fish and tiger prawns are two species that have invaded the Central Gulf Coast region in recent years, stressing fisheries and damaging smaller bay shrimp.
Also avoid sensitive fisheries and breeding areas. High speeds along the shoreline create a wake that causes erosion, damaging areas where fish and shrimp nest and breed.
Simple steps can be very effective for keeping our waterways clean, too. Wash your gear and watercraft after each trip out. Remove plant material from your boat. Carry a trash bag to dispose of waste properly, and pick up litter you see on the water. And please watch for leaks from your own engine.
We wish you safe boating, and ask you to be responsible for protecting our environment.
