Taking steps to become more eco-friendly is a great goal. Practice going green at home, and don’t forget to stretch that small effort to cover your workplace as well.

Being environmentally friendly at work not only promotes a clean environment, but also saves costs and boosts a company’s reputation.

It doesn’t have to be difficult to swap out your routines for more sustainable options:

  • Reduce paper waste by emailing reports or other information that may not require a hard copy. Save files as a digital copy instead of taking up space in a drawer or cabinet.
  • Make recycling easy and accessible by adding bins throughout the workplace. Label bins clearly so it is understood what items go in which bin.
  • Plants can clean the air naturally. They also provide other benefits that relate to wellness of employees.
  • Consider energy usage. Unplugging appliances that are not used overnight, making greater use of natural light, and installing motion sensor lights that automatically turn on and off can make a big difference in electricity consumption – and therefore the monthly bill.
  • Switch to eco-friendly cleaners to avoid harmful chemicals. In the bathroom, swap out paper towels for hand dryers to reduce landfill accumulation.
  • Bring your own coffee, water or lunch in BPA-free, reusable containers. (Bonus: Packing your own lunch is less expensive than eating out or ordering in.)
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator to save energy. It’s also a handy way to work on your fitness goals.
  • Carpool or take a bike to work if possible. If your job allows telecommuting even some of the time, it can bring a variety of benefits to you and your employer.

One of the best steps to take when adopting a more eco-friendly lifestyle is sharing it with your coworkers, friends and family. Be someone who inspires others to take on the green lifestyle!
