yellow flag flying on Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, AlabamaSometimes we just walk by and don’t even notice them. They are yellow or red, with a purple thrown in every now and then. Do you know what the flags flying at the beaches in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach mean?

Yellow flags indicate a moderate hazard of currents and surf.

Red flags are a sign of strong currents and high surf. Think of red as a sign of danger and exercise extreme caution in the water. If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore and try to relax and not fight it. When you are free of the pull, swim back to shore.

Double red flags mean extremely dangerous conditions, so the water is closed to the public for swimming and wading. You can still enjoy the beach, just don’t venture into the water.

If you see a purple flag flying with one of the other colors, be on the lookout for jellyfish or other dangerous marine life.

This time of year, the Gulf of Mexico can be smooth as a lake one day and send strong waves crashing to shore on the next. Pay attention to the warning flags and stay safe at the beach. If you are staying in a location that does not display warning flags, check surf conditions by calling 251-968-TIDE (8433) in Gulf Shores or 251-981-SURF (7873) in Orange Beach.

Enjoy your beach time and always remember to Leave Only Footprints when you go.
