children building sandcastles on the beachThey say children are like sponges: They absorb everything. Have you set a good example for your kids and grandkids at the beach? Let’s teach our children to Leave Only Footprints!

We take care of our environment so future generations will also be able to enjoy the outdoorsBut we also need to make sure the future generations know how to take care of our planet. It’s never too early to instill good habits and respect for our beautiful white-sand beaches.

How can you be a good role model?

  • Talk about the wildlife that lives on and around the beach, and look for tracks in the sand. Can you identify the tracks of a seagull and a crab?
  • Make a game of putting away toys. A colorful mesh bag is perfect for carrying toys to and from the beach.
  • If you spot a sea turtle nest, stay a safe distance away and use the opportunity to talk about the importance of not disturbing the nest.
  • Filling a hole may not be as much fun as digging it, but it is very important. Give each child a shovel and have a contest to see who fills their side first.
  • Kids should help clean up when it’s time to go. Give them their own little trash bag and show them how to place it in the proper refuse container.

Before you go to the beach, print out our beach-themed coloring pages.  The simple designs are fun to color and offer an opportunity to discuss the importance of taking care of the coastal habitat.
