Happy World Sea Turtle Day!

Sea turtle season has officially begun! Although June 16 is recognized as World Sea Turtle Day, endangered sea turtles head to the beautiful white, sandy beaches of Alabama from May to October every year. Here, they nest and lay their eggs.

Summer is a peak season for travel, so it’s essential to know about and respect these cute little creatures as they make their way to and from the water.

How can you do your part to protect them?

  • Avoid using flashlights or anything bright on the beach at night. The lights confuse the turtles and keep them from fulfilling their trek.
  • After dark, turn off the outside lights.
  • Do not disturb sea turtle nests.
  • Leave only your footprints. Female turtles will turn away and go back to the water if anything is in their way. This includes chairs, umbrellas, etc.
  • Do not dig large holes in the sand; be sure to fill in holes of all sizes before nightfall.
  • If you see a nest that needs to be marked off or spot a sea turtle, report it immediately by calling 866-SEA-TURTLE.

Following these rules, everyone, including our turtle friends, can enjoy the beautiful beaches!
