Gulf Shores Public Beach wheelchair accessible mats

For someone with mobility difficulties, the beautiful whitesand beaches in Gulf Shores used to be difficult to access. A specialty wheelchair was needed or other measures had to be taken to get a little closer to the water. That all changed on January 24, 2018, when the City of Gulf Shores installed their first Access Mat on the east side of the public beach. A few months later, another mat was installed on the west side of the public beach.

These bright blue mats are five feet wide and offer a pathway on the beach for wheelchairs and people who have difficulty walking in the soft sand. The Access Mats stop short of the water because the incline of the beach would make it difficult for a wheelchair to return to the boardwalk.

Beach safety officers and lifeguards can provide assistance for anyone needing help accessing the beachfront.
