When visiting the beaches of coastal Alabama, you may see a flag flying and wonder what it could mean.

Weather and wildlife conditions – locally and offshore – can cause dangerous situations at our beaches. It may be easy to recognize high surf and dangerous waves, but rip currents may not always be visible on top of the water. Conditions can change quickly, so always exercise caution, even on calm days.

Let’s take a look at the flags you may come across on your next visit.

Green Flag: The water is calm and it’s safe to swim.

Yellow Flag: Moderate surf or currents. Use caution when entering the water.

Red Flag: High surf and strong currents. Stay out of the water.

Purple Flag: Dangerous marine life, such as sharks, jellyfish or stingrays, may be present. Use extreme caution and stay alert if you choose to enter the water.

Double Red Flags: The beach is closed due to hazardous water conditions.

It is essential to pay attention to these flags to ensure your safety at the beach. Always follow the lifeguard’s instructions and never enter the water when the conditions are hazardous.
