Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry TrailGulf Shores and Orange Beach are favorite family vacation destinations, and our sugar-white sands draw more than 5 million visitors from across the nation each year. Sure, relaxing days on the beach can’t be beat. But the beach isn’t the only way to enjoy the great outdoors in our coastal communities. Try a few of the following suggestions for escaping the indoors.

  • Gulf State Park and the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, combined, have 28 miles of paved hiking and biking trails. Refer to the map and list of trails to explore it all.
  • Gulf State Park offers additional outdoor activities, including Segway tours, a fishing pier over the gulf, and launches for boats, kayaks and canoes at Lake Shelby and Middle Lake.
  • Get out on the water in a kayak to follow the Coastal Alabama Back Bay Blueway.
  • Grab some binoculars and make your way to some of the popular birding locations in our area. A wide variety of species can be seen throughout the year
  • Head out to Fort Morgan to discover not only the historical fort, but also nature areas at the end of Fort Morgan Road.

These are just a few ideas to consider. You’ll find even more inspiration in this list of outdoor activities

As you make your way around our great outdoors, remember to pack out what you pack in, be kind to others, respect the wildlife, and Leave Only Footprints as you go.
