Many of you have already gone out and picked your Christmas tree or are planning to do so in the near future. If you’re going to bring home a live tree for your seasonal celebrations, you may find yourself wondering what to do with it when the holidays are over. We are happy to share some tips on how to dispose of your tree, as well as how to upcycle/repurpose it yourself!

Before doing anything with your tree after the holidays, remove all decorations. This means the ornaments, lights, tinsel, tree stand, and anything else that may be attached or on it.

To dispose of your tree, many cities offer pickup or drop-off services. Check with your local trash and recycling services to discover your options.

Is upcycling or repurposing your Christmas tree more your style? Bring out your creative side by using the branches as an air freshener. Grab some tools to create wood coasters that serve a dual purpose of decorating your home and keeping drinkware off the coffee table.

If you prefer outdoor options, consider using the tree as mulch, for compost, or as a garden insulator. You may wish to chop it up to use as firewood to stay warm during the colder months or create a bonfire for an outdoor gathering complete with s’mores.

Another idea is to contact your local zoo or wildlife park to ask if they take tree donations. Many animals enjoy this extra enrichment during the winter months.

Make your used tree a little more permanent by setting it up as a place for wildlife to nest or as a bird feeder. If you purchased a rooted tree, plant it in your yard once the decorations have been removed.

Choose to be both festive and ecofriendly when you bring home a real Christmas tree this year.
