Looking for nonprofits to support during this season of giving? Below is a list of environmental groups that work to keep pollution out of the Gulf of Mexico and our local waterways. Those efforts are not free, but they are absolutely worthwhile. Each of these groups would be most appreciative of your gift to help keep our coastal environment pristine and protected.

Alabama Coastal Cleanup is held each September at multiple sites. This one-day brings volunteers, state agencies, municipalities and non-profits together to remove and track the types of trash collected. While the cleanup may be the most recognized event, it is just part of a year-round effort with a diverse focus.

The Weeks Bay Foundation supports the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Started in 1990, the foundation has since protected more than 7,000 acres of coastline in Baldwin and Mobile counties.

The Alabama Coastal Foundation participates in an array of projects, including tree and marsh grass plantings, invasive species removal, bird stewardship and education programs in local schools.

Mobile BayKeeper is on a mission to protect the beauty, health and heritage of the Mobile Bay Watershed and coastal communities. This is accomplished through water monitoring, research, education and advocacy.

National organizations also make a difference. The Ocean Conservancy participates in programs to keep plastics out of our waters. Oceana works to protect the world’s marine life and habitats.

Natural Resources Defense Council safeguards our planet and its air, water, plants and animals through litigation, working with businesses, research and partnerships.

The Nature Conservancy protects millions of acres of land as well as countless rivers and streams.
