It’s Carnival season on the Alabama coast, bringing a partying atmosphere to our already festive location. Parades will roll in on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 in Orange Beach, and again on Mardi Gras Day (Feb. 13) in both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. We love welcoming visitors to enjoy the revelry, but we ask that you use environmentally friendly practices while here. Let’s deal first with the beads, many of which end up in the streets or in trash [...]

Four tips to be an eco-friendly angler

By |2017-12-27T22:48:39+00:00December 27th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Winter is an excellent time to hit the waters of the Alabama Gulf Coast. With mild temperatures and great fishing, boaters can enjoy the gulf and our bays year-round. But there are steps you should take to protect those waterways while you’re out. First, report any leaking-fuel incidents you see while out boating. Anyone witnessing an oil spill, chemical release or maritime security incident should call the National Reporting Center hotline at 800-424-8802. Watch out for the spread of aquatic [...]

Winter tips for the beach

By |2017-12-20T15:18:11+00:00December 20th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Headed to the beach during the winter? We highly recommend it. After all, temperatures average 55 to 60  degrees even in January and February, making it a great time to enjoy our beautiful coast. Many people would rather relax in an area with sand than shovel snow in the cold weather. Here, our golf courses are good to go all year long. Greens stay green, and short sleeves are often the wardrobe of the day. The beach, as well as [...]

Plan an environmentally friendly Christmas

By |2017-12-13T21:46:01+00:00December 13th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

One way to protect the coast is to implement environmentally friendly practices all year long, including over the Christmas holidays. Some ways to go green this Christmas include using LED lights, which emit 80 percent less energy than traditional Christmas lights and last 10 times longer according to Today’s Homeowner. Limit your use of lights by turning them off when you go to bed at night. Another tip from Today’s Homeowner is to go old-fashioned when it comes to choosing [...]

Protecting wildlife on the Alabama coast

By |2017-11-15T14:34:36+00:00November 15th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Sea turtle nesting season may be coming to a close, but there are plenty of other wild creatures on the Alabama coast that need our protection. The most basic thing you can do to help is be sure to remove trash and gear from the beach. Birds can mistake wrappers or plastic containers for food. While we’re talking about those seagulls, herons and other birds on the beach, please don’t feed them. It’s dangerous for them and for other visitors. [...]

Alabama coast spared the wrath of an eventful hurricane season

By |2017-12-20T04:33:14+00:00November 8th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

We’re coming to the end of an eventful hurricane season. Fortunately, the Alabama coast has been spared this year, but the same can’t be said of our neighbors in the Caribbean, Florida and Texas. The 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season rivaled any on record. The season included more than 13 named storms, five of which were major hurricanes that were Category 3 or stronger. Of course, you know the worst of those: Harvey that flooded the Texas coast; Irma that destroyed [...]

What makes our waters great for oysters

By |2017-10-11T14:07:46+00:00October 11th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Don’t you just love oysters? Baked, grilled, steamed or raw, you can’t beat the flavor of a dozen fresh Gulf oysters. It’s crucial for the industry that we keep our local waters clean. You help in that effort when you pick up your trash and use environmentally-friendly boating practices. The warm, brackish waters of Mobile Bay, Navy Cove, Portersville Bay and other places make a perfect growing spot for oyster farms. When cultivated well, our waters produce plump and briny [...]

Recycling program improves water quality, helps oysters grow

By |2017-09-20T14:30:19+00:00September 20th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Do you ever wonder what happens to those shells after you finish off a dozen oysters at your favorite seafood restaurant? Many of those eateries are taking part in an oyster recycling program started last year by the Alabama Coastal Foundation and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Republic Services collects the shells that would have previously been thrown away and delivers them to a site where they are stored outside. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources then loads them onto barges [...]
