How recycling at home can help keep our beaches clean

By |2018-11-21T15:15:42+00:00November 21st, 2018|Blog|0 Comments

We appreciate visitors following Leave Only Footprints rules while visiting our beaches, but there is more you can do even when you return home. Going green is a way of life. Recycling your bottles, cans, metals and paper products is one way to do that. Nationwide, our recycling efforts have improved greatly. By |2017-10-18T13:54:17+00:00October 18th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Say no to the straw

Little things can make a big difference. Take, for example, the simple plastic straw. We all use them, sometimes multiple times a day. You pretty much have to make it a point to say you don’t want a straw in the drive-thru line or at a restaurant. In fact, it is estimated that each day consumers use 500 million straws. That’s enough to fill more than 46,400 school buses each year with straws. Statistics show each person in the United [...]

Do you ever wonder what happens to those shells after you finish off a dozen oysters at your favorite seafood restaurant? Many of those eateries are taking part in an oyster recycling program started last year by the Alabama Coastal Foundation and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Republic Services collects the shells that would have previously been thrown away and delivers them to a site where they are stored outside. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources then loads them onto barges [...]

Meeting the Clean Coast challenge as a community

By |2016-11-23T14:39:50+00:00November 23rd, 2016|Blog|0 Comments

When the business community, local residents and visitors all get on the same page to keep a clean island, good things happen! So, what can the community do? Glad you asked! First is to ensure your business and home are “green.” That means using recycled paper and glass products, recycling your waste and reducing energy consumption. In addition, take public transit when you can, carpool, or even walk or bike when it’s safe to do so. Does every member of [...]
