For most of us, plastics are part of our daily life. Water bottles, straws and plastic bags are just the start. There’s also plastic in food packaging, computer parts and your car.

Those plastics can end up in our waterways, causing danger for wildlife. Plastic has been found in more than 60 percent of seabirds and 100 percent of sea turtle specimens, according to the Ocean Conservancy.

Reducing the use of plastics is a good way to protect the Gulf of Mexico and other waterways, as well as local wildlife. Use these tips to be part of the solution:

  • Stop using plastic straws, even in restaurants. Buy a reusable stainless steel or glass straw instead.
  • Carry a reusable canvas grocery bag.
  • Give up gum, which is made of synthetic rubber.
  • Buy products such as laundry detergent in boxes instead of bottles.
  • Reuse containers for storing leftovers or shopping in bulk.
  • Use a reusable bottle or mug for beverages.
  • Don’t use plasticware at home.
  • Pack your lunch in reusable containers instead of plastic bags.

By making a few changes in your daily life, you can help reduce the use and production of plastics, and protect the environment, too.
