The Leave No Footprints policy in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is based on the seven Leave No Trace principles. The Leave No Trace program encourages everyone to enjoy and explore the outdoors while leaving minimal impact on the environment. Since we all want to preserve our beautiful beaches for generations to come, let’s take a look at how these principles apply when visiting our beaches along the Alabama Gulf Coast.

1) Plan ahead.

The best beach day starts before you reach the sand. Take a look at this recent blog with tips for preparing and packing for your day at the beach.

2) Travel and camp on durable surfaces.

By using the boardwalks and never walking on the sand dune system, you help protect this fragile habitat and our coastline. Additionally, for the protection of our beaches and wildlife, camping is not allowed on the beach. Instead, take your pick of one of the many campgrounds and RV parks in the area.

3) Dispose of waste properly.

A clean beach is a beautiful beach! If you bring disposable items with you, please deposit all trash and recyclable material in the appropriate bins placed along the beach.

4) Leave what you find.

While the sand, shells and sand dollars are beautiful, please do not remove them. Their removal can damage our coastal ecosystem over time. Enjoy their beauty in the moment and opt for a photo instead!

5) Minimize campfire impacts.

This principle is pretty simple at the beach: No fire of any kind is allowed, including camp fires, fireworks, sky lanterns, sparklers, tiki torches, grills and cooking devices.

6) Respect wildlife.

Many species of wildlife visit or call our beach home through the year. Sea turtle nesting season runs May through October, and it’s crucial we share the beach with these amazing friends. If you encounter a sea turtle or unmarked nest, call 866-SEA-TURTLE. Additionally, please refrain from feeding the birds.

7) Be considerate of other visitors.

Last, but certainly not least, think of others during your visit. We can all have a great time without being disruptive. And each day, please leave the beach the way you’d like to find it: clean and beautiful! All your gear and trash must be removed by one hour after sunset.
